Normaal
Voorkoms: 'n Ligte geelbruin / grys of bruinerige kleur, tesame met baie min elektrode-erosie, dui op optimale werkingstoestande, insluitend 'n gesonde enjin en korrekte vonkprop-hittebereik.
 
Deposito's
Voorkoms en simptome: Die elektrodes — middel en grond — is bedek met 'n asagtige laag. As gevolg van hierdie maskering van die elektrodes, kan u enjin verkeerd brand. Hierdie opbou van verbrandingsneerslae kan uiteindelik (maar gewoonlik nie) die spasie tussen die twee elektrode invul.

Nat en droë bevuiling
Voorkoms en simptome: Droë bevuiling (bo) lyk as 'n roetagtige, swart opbou. Nat besoedeling (onderkant) het 'n nat, soms olierige voorkoms. Albei toestande kan swak begin en verkeerde aansteek veroorsaak.
 
Moontlike oorsake: Afhangend daarvan of die bougie met olie of brandstof bedek is, kan nat besoedeling simptomaties wees van 'n verswakte koppakking, swak beheer van u suier se oliebeheerring, valvetreinprobleme of 'n uiters ryk toestand. Droë besoedeling, of koolstofbesmetting, word dikwels veroorsaak deur 'n té ryk toestand, en die probleem kan by u lugreiniger (verstop) of vergasser wees. Ander moontlike oorsake kan wees as gevolg van lae kompressie, vakuumlekkasie, te vertraagde tydsberekening of onbehoorlike vonkprop se hittebereik.
 
Lood Fouling
