Introduction to Multi-Electrode Spark Plugs

2025-10-21

Conventional multi-electrode spark plugs generally refer to side electrodes. However, in industrial applications, there are also cases where the number of center and side electrodes is the same. For example, the R10P3/R10P7 both have four electrodes.

The side electrode multi-electrode mode is often a uniform distribution of multiple electrodes within the same circumference; the most common ones are 2/3/4 electrodes, which are usually welded to the shell. The function of each electrode of this type is the same.

The other type is a three-electrode distribution with main and auxiliary electrodes. The main electrode is the same as the single-electrode product, but the auxiliary electrode is at a 90°angle to the main electrode on the circumference. The main electrode gap is formed by the end surface of the center electrode, while the auxiliary electrode gap is formed by the side surface of the center electrode; stabilizing the flame core effect;

The multi-electrode mechanism is actually the same as the single-electrode mechanism. Multiple electrodes do not result in multiple sparks. During the engine ignition process, only one spark occurs. The simultaneous sparks seen on multiple electrodes are just visual afterimages. The purpose of multiple electrodes is to allow more electrodes to be consumed, thereby extending the lifespan.
